Once in a while, something comes along that makes you reevaluate everything you thought you knew about Bangkok. For some people it’s a choice encounter with the country’s third sex, for others its a harsh realization that those tasty skewers of grilled chicken you’ve been consuming inebriated for years are actually duck butt – for KohSpot, it was Club 11′s mountain bike trail.
Who knew you could find a real mountain biking trail in a jungle in Bangkok? Seriously, Bangkok? How cool can you get? We take back all the bad things we ever said about you including that one time we said Jakarta is the new Bangkok. Please forgive us.
Club 11 is located on the army’s 11th infantry regiment off of Phahonyothin Road in between Kasetsart University and the Lak Si roundabout in Bang Khen district, so it’s on the outskirts of town, but still easily accessible. Obviously there’s no mountains, but the three-kilometer track encompasses several testing disciplines from slalom to rapid succession hills to a sand trap to staying on the correct track with the aid of only a few arrows at high-speed intersections.
Most riders can finish the circuit in about 15 minutes, but for those who lap it in closer to 10, they have time trial races a couple of times a year, with the next one in May. Even if speed isn’t your game, this is a fantastic place to just have a ride and soak in the nature. There are several birds roaming around the park, monitor lizards, rumors of a few pythons, and often locals fishing in the waterway, which serve as obstacles for riders.
You have to pay 100 baht to get a membership card, but after that it’s only 30 baht per day to use the course. And here’s the best part: if you don’t have a mountain bike, they lend you one for free. A canteen and toilets and showers are on site, so even if you do a header into the water hazard on your virgin run, you can hose off the humiliation.
Unfortunately Club 11’s website doesn’t seem to have a moderator, so it’s just become a tangled mass of ads for boner pills which clearly means the site was set-up by these guys. The club also has paintball, BB gun challenges, live ammo ranges, atv runs, and probably anything else you can think of and are willing to pay for in the wild (don’t go there).
Location: 11th infantry regiment, on Phahonyothin Road in between the Bang Bua canal and the Lak Si roundabout. You might be required to leave your ID at the gate. Just tell the guard you want Club 11.
Mass transit: You could take the BTS or MRT to Mo Chit and then bus it up Phahonyothin, but allow plenty of time for transport.
Hours: 10 am-6 pm Monday-Friday, 7 am-6 pm weekends
