Nunglen in Bangkok is an anomaly to club scenes around the world.
Most clubs generate the bulk of their income on the weekends. Most clubs have a high season and a low season. Most clubs disappear from existence only to reemerge with a new owner and a new name. Nunglen is not most clubs.
Nunglen is a bar owners dream with customers cramming into the club each and every night to hand over wads of baht for a chance to sing, dance and party the night away. The bar has a standardized yet slightly modern club decor that is suitable enough for the trendoids who frequent this club.
People at Nunglen party hard, guzzling whiskey like Keith Richards, but amazingly no one can remember a fight occurring at this place. Everyone is enjoying themselves and everyone is looking sexy. What’s not to love?
The crowd is “B+ list”. Not necessarily famous people, but people who look good, feel good and have some money to blow…on blow.
Most patrons are college educated or are actively enrolled in a prestigious university. They also probably volunteer every third Sunday at a hospital and have really cute dogs – who knows.
Nunglen boasts a rocking Thai band nightly with a sound system that rivals the opening scene in Back to the Future. The bands always have a great stage presence and play to the crowd like a marionette puppet master that cause the local patrons to dance feverishly and sing along with a passion that can only be described as “Tokyo karaoke at full blast”. Local Farangs who have no idea what the song lyrics are about dance right along with the crowd.
This is where you bring your friend from out of town to show off your life in Bangkok. Bottles, with a round of mixers, will only cost you around 1600baht. The kaw moo yahng is absolutely delicious and combined with the French fries is a tantalizing nibble when attempting to coat the stomach with something more than just booze. Its hard not to have fun in this place.
If you’ve never been, check out Nunglen, you will not be disappointed. Don’t forget your ID, they card. Dress up lads.
