Walking around Bangkok, you quickly come to realize that many men are not “follically blessed.” But for those that are and carry a little metro-sexual side to themselves, head to HML Salon at Grass Thonglor for one of the best haircuts in Bangkok.
We’ve long asserted that Park & Bomb Academy Salon at the Eight complex is the best place in Bangkok for a male haircut. However, be it new teachers or students, Park & Bomb has really dropped the clippers (so-to-speak) on almost every level. The hair-stylist G-Hoo left citing “irreconcilable differences” and the pretentiousness of the greeters and lackluster passion of the new stylists is out of control. Sensible, thoughtful and deliberate fashion gave way to insecure, wanna-be trend-setters suffering from a misguided and capricious Thonglor youth unaware of what good customer service means to the vitality of a salon.
Thank goodness for HLM Salon at Grass Thonglor (with another location on Soi Ari).
Head up to the second floor of the front unit in the Grass Complex to find HML Salon, right above the Kyra bra shop that has proven the impossible by keeping its doors open despite many never seeing a customer inside (clearly a front).
HLM Salon is small and is tucked into a narrow albeit long space. They use the space well. Exposed ceilings and glassy finished concrete floors gives the token ‘warehouse’ look for the salon. Only three comfortable styling chairs sit in front of over-sized, gold framed mirrors, tilted against the wall to ensure that perfect angle that makes you appear less skinny, and therefore love your haircut no matter what.
The main stylist, and recognized Bangkok superstar is Mr Manoon (Ton). Ton doesn’t carry an extroverted personality which seems requisite of most stylists; he is reserved, quiet, quick with a calming smile and very focused. Watching him cut hair is like watching a professional Japanese bonsai cutter or a meticulous origami artists. He never blinks. Ton carries quite the following and only works at HLM Salon at Thonglor Sunday-Tuesday 1100-2000, so call ahead.
Each cut comes with an amazing head massage and shampoo, administered by the token cute, smiley girls working in the salon. They also help with blow-drying and overall maintenance/clean-up for Ton. Yes, Ton is a pimp.
The music is up-beat and trendy, but it had a tinge of surf-rock and easy acoustic thrown in to keep the atmosphere mellow and chill.
Mens and Ladies styles/cuts/shampoos both run 700 baht for any of the stylists other than Mr Ton, who commands 1,000 baht. Its worth the extra 300 baht for Ton. Hair coloring is 1500 baht up, depending on the treatment, straightening is 2000 baht up and if you want to get a Snoop Dogg inspired perm it will cost you 3000 baht.
For men that are seeking a good professional hair-cut, HLM Salon at Grass Thonglor is your spot.
