Hey Bangkok business owners! Are you really opening another Wine Bistro? Yep.
It looks like Wine Republic is next in line to capture Bangkokians love affair with mediocre Wine themed restaurants. Wine republic resides in the home of what used to be Whisky Mist. The renovation is nice, but we have to ask the age old question, what is the difference between Wine Republic, Wine I Love You, Wine Connection and Wine 33? Once again, not much. Comments are as follows:
Food – Steaks, Pasta, and Moo on a stick. Although priced competitively (considering the area and relative quality of ingredients) the menu at Wine Republic is easily forgotten. The ‘Mixed grill with Vegetables’(220THB) is an egalitarian bangers and mash with a small serving of spinach while each pasta dish reminded us more of microwavable meals than authentically crafted italian food. The one winner was the ‘Salmon with spicy sauce’ (200baht), which was smoked salmon on a bed of iceberg lettuce with a drizzle of nam jim taleh. Somehow Wine Republic made this work.
Wine – Damn it. Why do all these wine establishments refuse to offer a wine list. When we visit a restaurant high on life (or synthetic mood alternating drugs) the last thing we want to do is get up off our lazy bums and clumsily teeter-totter around a wine rack. What makes matters worse is that the combined knowledge from the army of sommeliers failed to go beyond what was already printed on the labels. Yes, we can read too. And excuse us, but “spicy” is not an apt adjective for wine.
If you opt out of the bottle service then you have a the option of ‘red’ or ‘white’ for a single glass. Weak.
One of the redeeming qualities of wine republic is their extensive cocktail and whisky offerings (single malts like McCallan and Glenfiddich are available), which is probably remnants of Whisky Mist.
Atmosphere – This is one area where Wine Republic actually shines. With a sophisticated yet jaunty decor one can’t help but feel a little sexy while sipping on vino at the Wine Republic. We can only assume Kanye penned “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay‘ while chomping on some onion rings at the Wine Republic. Inside there is a house DJ spinning digestible house music at appropriate levels. Tip: If you are looking for some added privacy but still want to people watch, head up the stairs and walk straight to the end of the room (opposite of restrooms). You will have your very own balcony over looking the Wine Republic deck and bustling Thong Lor.
Crowd – Really good looking people and three kinda dorky looking people.
Verdict – Sit back and enjoy a bottle of wine with your date, but you may want to eat somewhere else.
One year update - Food has marginally improved, but the cheese on their signatures pizza taste cheap and plastic. They have added wine-tasting on Mondays and still rely on a very mediocre sommelier at the wine rack. We still stand by our verdict of a year ago which states that Wine Republic is a good place to enjoy some drinks with some friends early in the night, but head elsewhere for food. The lack of quality ingredients do not justify the prices irregardless of how many mid-so Thais are seen eating there.
