We get the feeling that Wine Me Up is a business foremost and a Wine Bar second. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing when one evaluates efficiency, professionalism and quality control. Abiding by the mantra, “as long as the outcome is income” Wine Me Up serves classic Italian dishes in a gaudy neoclassical interior, complete with furniture that would make Edward Cullen feel at home.
Perched on the top floor of the ultra successful mini-mall that is Seen Space (Thong Lor soi 13), Wine Me Up steps up the expectations in the food department when compared to its wine hawking brethren like the Wine Republic, Wine I love You and the cringe worthy Wine Loft. If you are like us, then you have come to approach Bangkok’s latest Wine bars with a healthily does of skepticism. That is why Wine Me Up is like a sip of 1945 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild Jeroboam. Ok, maybe not quite that unique, but we were pleasantly surprised to find both the wine offerings and food pairings at Wine Me Up to be of decent value. Chonlada Chevathakorn, the owner behind Pandanus Bar and Bistro on Sathorn, knows a thing or two about running an chick Italian bistro and that comes into play with the experience one has at Wine Me Up.
Unlike shoddy Wine Republic and gentrified Wine Connection, Wine Me Up has your tastebuds in mind. We started the evening with the Smoked Salmon Salad (240), which was fresh packed with abundant mixed greens and came with the perfect amount of red oak balsamic sauce drizzled on top. The Pasta de la Casa (280) is tagliatelle pasta filled with big prawns, chicken, pepperoni and mushrooms all basking in a wonderful yet not overpowering garlic and chilli sauce. The dish was devoured within seconds. There are other hits on the menu, like the Snapper Fillter with prune sauce and fettuccine with River prawns – all priced competitively when one compares similar dishes at the surrounding Italian joints.
Wine Me Up really separates itself from the wine bar rat pack by having a superb selection of wines. Go figure. with 60 labels from around the world, there really is something for everybody. Bottles range from 600thb to 6,000 with six different wines by the glass starting at 180thb. Wine Me Up also had the crazy idea of listing the wine selection in a wine menu. A simple yet important step that a lot of the other wine bars in Bangkok somehow forgot to include in their business plan. Our only complaint is the thumping house music that made us want to dance, but the timing and volume of the tunes was all wrong.
Wine Me Up does a lot of things right by not following in the steps of its wine bar predecessors. We are predicting that this business will do well.
