Yes, Bully’s has been dethroned, KohSpotters. Firehouse Pub and Restaurant delivers on both the burger and the little things, so to crib the column-finisher from Bangkok Burger Blog, who recommended this place to us, this IS the best burger in Bangkok.
The previous occupant of this space on Sukhumvit Soi 11 just across from QBar, Grace’s Burger Bar, generated lots of rave reviews but suspiciously closed after a few months. So it’s lucky for Bangkokians that the previous owner of Grace’s decided to pass the Burger torch to someone with an undying love for burgers and firefighters. Wait, what?
Firehouse Pub and Restaurant claims that they have the “largest collection of antique and vintage firemen helmets and memorabilia in the Kingdom”. Considering that no one else in Thailand collects such items they are probably right . There are photos of firefighters on duty covering the walls, and what space those don’t take up is used on firemen’s hats and jackets. It’s a bit much for KohSpot, but it gives the place an identity. Who doesn’t like theme restaurants? Believe it or not the firefighting theme blends nicely with the music, with Dan Fogelberg’s Sutter’s Mill and even George Michael’s Careless Whisper finding an accepting audience at Firehouse Pub and Restaurant.
Each table is fitted with a wooden bucket of free peanuts so you have something to nibble on before your meal is served. And for burger orders, a huge mason jar filled with pickles is served before the burger even comes. We’d expect that from a deli in the West, but Bravo to Firehouse for the extra touches.
The burger was everything we could ever ask from a juicy 180 gram patty of fresh ground rib-eye of Thai-French beef. We attempted to place our order by playing this song on our diamond encrusted iPhone, but surprisingly it didn’t work. After several awkward interactions with the waitress we finally summoned up a Premium burger (195 baht) the old fashion way. Toppings such as cheddar cheese (40 baht), avocado (60 baht) and sautéed mushrooms (30 baht) cost extra, but we feel they’re worth it. Perfect texture, perfect taste, perfect burger.
The wait was only about 15 minutes and the restaurant cooks your burger medium unless you instruct otherwise. The potato wedges were a little overcooked, but satisfying as potatoes can get. The crowd here is mainly single men, but we think they’ll get a lot of late-night business from high heeled ladies pouring out from Bed Supper Club and Q Bar (they stay open til 3 am).
The rest of the menu features typical diner choices, though they brag on their fish & chips, so KohSpot will have to schedule a return visit. They have several promotions, including half-price Heineken draught on Mondays for Men, half-price cocktails for ladies on Wednesday, and half-price drinks everyday from 4:30-8:30 happy hour. We are still waiting for our own promotion of double-priced champagne on Baller Sundays.
KohSpot demands you try Firehouse and let us know what you think. Its that good.
