From the folks at Alliance Francaise who have taught hilarious francophone accents to the tonal-heavy Thai student for 98 years, comes Cafe 1912, a chilled out coffee shop and eatery serving up strong espressos, pastries and a self-serve lunch buffet.
Tucked in the corner of the Alliance Franciase on the lung-collapsing Sathorn Road, the baristas, donning mandatory checkered-berets, pour stiff coffee drinks for reasonable fare. A cafeteria style petit dejeuner is on the menu along with pastries designed and created with all the savoir-faire of Folies, a former Oriental Hotel executive turned French-pastry-slanging-monsieur.
1912 jams a dated minimalist design with urban tropical tones and is shaded by a lush garden opening the option for indoor or outdoor seating for the public, Alliance employees, Parisian expats and local girls passionately awaiting their French visa rejection.
A move surely to have Voltaire in a hiss, wireless internet (60 baht/hour) sets you back more than an iced latte, but with pictures of Sathorn Road circa 1912 behind the coffee bar and a potpourri of patron people-watching, leave the cpu at home and enjoy this little taste of French cafe-culture in the financial heart of Bangkok.
Cafe 1912 is open Monday – Saturday from 7am to 7pm and Sunday 7am to 2pm.
