Its not really surprising that some of the best burger joints in Bangkok are also located within a short distance of the red-light shenanigans of Bangkok.
It is surprising that the establishment that we’ve only known as the ‘place with the brass bull outside’ actually boasts one of the best burgers in Bangkok. That “place” is Bully’s Bar and Restaurant.
Located on Sukhumvit between Soi 2 and 4, Bully’s interior dons dark-wooded paneling and lots of bull’s horns and bullhorn-shaped paraphernalia, such as long wooden canoes dangling with the ceiling. The crowd is lively and leans towards local office workers and expat men lining the belly for a night out in the city’s under-belly.
Bully’s has been receiving a lot of solid discussion amongst Bangkok expats recently. Bangkok Burger Blog and BK Magazine both raved about Bully’s burgers, so we felt it was our inherent duty to head down to the Nana area and try their 180 grams of charcoal-grilled Argentinian beef goodness. This burger’s legit. A clue that Bully’s isn’t messing around is the roughly 20-pound wooden condiment tray that includes green sauce, red sauce, hot sauce, HP sauce, Worchestershire sauce, ketchup, mustard, malt vinegar and anything else you can think of. We told them medium and the burger came dripping its red and greasy goodness onto the bun. The Bully’s burger (190 baht) comes with lettuce, tomato and onion, while cheese, mushrooms, bacon or egg are all another 20 baht.
You gotta wash that down with something, and while we appreciate that Bully’s has Kronenberg 1664, Kilkenny and Munchen HB on tap, we had to order the Bacchus Kriek (220 baht) when we saw its unusual paper packaging. Even the waitress was perplexed by the beer (clearly no one had ever ordered it before) and wanted to stand next to it for a picture (she was hot so we let her). KohSpot had such a good experience with the Kasteel Rouge Belgian cherry beer we had at Fat Fish, but this one was a tad too sweet and almost tasted like sizzurp without the hilarity.
This place serves all the pub favorites such as fish and chips (290 baht), baby back ribs (320 baht), and in addition to burgers is known for its big breakfasts. The music is awful, but that’s not surprising for this type of venue. Four pool tables and a grip of TVs are available for those with ADD.
To us, Bully’s feels like a good launching off spot if you’re trying to meet up with some buddies for a laid-back atmosphere, great burger and lively patron base before a night out.
