We were once told that sarcasm is an unintelligent person’s wit so it comes with straight-laced conviction when we tell you that KohSpot loves rooftop bars in Bangkok.
One of the newest rooftop bars in Bangkok we love is amBar, the rooftop lounge at the top of the Four Points by Sheraton on Sukhumvit Soi 15 which is also managed by Bo, who some might remember from Barbican-fame (apparently hated our review from 2010). The promotional and managerial efforts of amBar seem to be working as the bar was certainly popular both times we kicked it here and for good reason.
Let us explain.
The cocktails are less creative than Nest and the view less appealing than Long Table or Sky Bar and the capitalization of the venue’s namesake a bit gimmicky, but we still really like this place. Why? A few reasons. The atmosphere is completely laid back and super friendly. It lacks any of the stuffy-ness of the Long Table and Banyan Tree variety. The waitresses and bartenders are genuinely interested in conversation, provided superb recommendations and created a feeling of welcomeness. What a relief to the roof top scene when compared to the mid-so snobbery of the staff working at Nest, the most pretentious place in Bangkok.
amBar goes with a chic black and white design and is plenty spacious with two private areas fringed by shrubbery, a long bar and more social seating closer to the pool. Unfortunately, the bar discourages people from swimming at night because drunk people have a tendency to drown or be cavalier and ride a jet ski in a pool.
amBar has a band every Thursday night, and a DJ spinning token chill tunes the rest of the time. It plans to offer a wide selection of steak starting around the new year. Beers are 100 baht, cocktails 200, and glasses of wine 300 baht. Alcoholic slurpees are free for an hour on Friday nights.
If we had one request of amBar it would be too exploit its resources and serve the great beer from the ground floor at Beer Vault up top at amBar. The current beer selection is rather paltry on the roftop.
The weather is great this time of year, so get out and enjoy the crisp evenings with fantastic service and mellow moods.
Keep on eye on their Facebook page for promotions.
